Visiting this Mexican eco-park will make you feel transformed in ways you’ve never imagined. Let the stalactites, stalagmites and the crystal clear waters of Río Secreto guide you to the grounds of eco-tourism!
On your expedition to Río Secreto, you will be able to swim and walk an underground world for 90 minutes through crystalline waters, where silence becomes an unexpected pleasingly surprise. You will walk among 600 meters / 656 yards of breathtaking rock formations composed of stalactites and stalagmites within the nature reserve.
Stalactites and stalagmites are made of calcium carbonate and are formed when the rain deposited in the ground filters through the limestone. Every drop that filters allow the rather slow growth of these formations, registers show that over the course of three months, some stalactites grew HALF A MILLIMETER! Whereas some others grew 60 cm after 360 thousand years!
The karst system of Río Secreto connects to more than 400 km / 248.5 miles of underground rivers! And experts say this system is over 5 million years old! There are almost 30 persons that guide visitors. Each guide takes groups of 10 person max because they are in charge of guiding people about the importance of this ecosystem, while at the same time supervising in a specific way that nobody extracts a single piece of the place. There are some areas in the system that can reach up to 120 m deep but, the public areas are no more than 5 meters deep.
